I, personally, am a vegetarian, and I recommend it to everybody. Lower saturated fat, it lowers hypertension, you'll feel lighter... It's been just over a year, and I'll never go back. Honestly. The United States is under the societal impression that we need TONS of protein and that meals must be centered around meat. I mean, it's how we grew up! But there are a ton of vegetarian cookbooks with real, accessible ingredients that TASTE GOOD. Check out for some of their articles and pamphlets. Really great tips, and they are advocating for vegetarian and vegan school lunch options as we speak! Even if going veg isn't your style, try eating at least 2 meatless dinners a week (tofu stiry-fry with sesame oil is fantabulous, btw, if you'd like a recipe). Fruit smoothies are also a great way to get kids to eat healthier. I recommend almond milk for these, since cow's milk is literally designed to grow a 500 calf to a 1500 lb cow in less than a year. Soy milk just isn't for everybody. Almond milk has abt the consistency of skim milk, is smooth, and tastes closest to the taste-preferred dairy option than any other alternative I've tried. For a basic fruit smoothie, pour maybe 1/ 4 - 1/ 3c almond milk into blender first, then add fresh or frozen fruits and blend, adding more almond milk for the right consistency. Kids would LOVE to do this! Have them pick out their favorite fruits and mix them any way they want. Splenda can help sweeten tart fruit. For a superfood smoothie, blend some kale, spinach, carrots, you name it, into the fruit smoothie! The fruit will cover up the green's flavor, but you still get the benefits of all those vitamins, and the only thing to get over is the color! GO FOR A FAMILY WALK! Just around the block... Make it a nightly ritual before or after dinner each night |
